Restoring the Culture of Peace in Zanzibar: Youth and Children for Peaceful Co-existence

The GNRC Secretary General attended a planning meeting in Zanzibar organized by GNRC Tanzania. The aim of the meeting was to review a Program “Restoring the Culture of Peace in Zanzibar: Youth and Children for Peaceful Co-existence” and form an Advisory Committee for the Program aimed at peace building in the Islands.


The GNRC Secretary General attended a planning meeting in Zanzibar organized by GNRC Tanzania on 13th September 2013. The aim of the meeting was to review a Program “Restoring the Culture of Peace in Zanzibar: Youth and Children for Peaceful Co-existence” and form an Advisory Committee for the Program aimed at peace building in the Islands.

The Secretary General, Dr Mustafa Ali emphasized on the importance of ensuring the program was both conflict-sensitive, culture- sensitive and gained the support of the religious leaders, parents and elders—the vital stakeholders in Zanzibar.
An Advisory Committee consisting of 12 members who will oversee the Restoring the Culture of Peace in Zanzibar: Youth and Children for Peaceful Co-existence Program has been formed in Zanzibar, Tanzania.  The members include Dr Mohammed Hafidh, Mr Mustapha Sharif, Ms Zeyana Hamid, Ms Asya Maulid, Fr. Damas Alexi – TEC, Mr Kai Mbarouk, Sheikh Abdallah Talib, a representative from Office of Mufti, representative from the Ministry of Education, Pastor Nuhu, and a representative the Ministry dealing with children issues in Zanzibar.

Participants of the meeting included officials from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, representatives from the Religious Institutions, CSOs, Youth groups and the GNRC.
