GNRC–South Africa in partnership with Religions for Peace and Info4africa held a peace awareness forum for youth themed Mutual Respect -Understanding Self and Others on 22nd August 2017 at the Manning Road Methodist Church Hall, Durban, South Africa.
A total of seventy nine (79) participants from St. Francis College, New Forest High School, Rossburgh High School, Overport Secondary School, Inanda Seminary, Centenary Secondary School, Sastri College, Westville Girls High School and Lotusville Primary School, attended the forum.
Led by the GNRC coordinator in South Africa, Ms. Saydoon Nisa Sayed, facilitators used the Learning To Live Together Manual to facilitate learning during the workshop. Strategies such as group discussions, situation analysis, experience sharing and question and answer sessions were used to enhance learning during the forum.
Ms. Saydoon Nisa Sayed shared her experience as a participant at the GNRC 5th Forum. “Tremendous global reach,” were some of the words she used. Participants also explored the benefits that the Panama Declaration on Ending Violence Against Children would have in empowering the youth and creating equality in the society.
Participants learnt how to appreciate diversity in others and how to respect everyone’s right. They also learnt to empathize and be compassionate through understanding other people’s imagination, happiness and pain.
