Reaching to the Turkana Community

Remote parts of Turkana County still rely heavily on church missionaries, especially the Catholic Church to provide most of the basic services in health care, education and food security.

The Catholic Diocese of Lodwar runs and supports many schools, providing kids with lunch, which for many becomes the only meal for the day. It runs many healthcare centres that provides quality services in collaboration with the Turkana County Government. By doing so, the church has become a major player in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 1, 3 and 4 on eradication of poverty, quality healthcare and education respectively.

At a Dinner on 4th November 2016, Arigatou International staff from both the Global Network of Religions for Children and the Interfaith Initiative to End Child Poverty joined the ‘Fiends of Lodwar’, a group of Christians committed to supporting the people of Turkana and other well-wishers to raise funds to support the above highlighted initiatives of the church. The function was led by Bishop Dominic Kimengich of Lodwar assisted by the Chairman of the organizing committee Mr. John Sergon and Fr. Joseph Ekomwa of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
