Religious leaders from Kenya, Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome and Sheikh Abubakar Abduu Abubakar and GNRC Secretary General Dr. Mustafa Y. Ali met with religious leaders and government officials in Zanzibar as well as scholars from Zanzibar Universities to discuss ways in which peace could be strengthened in Zanzibar and address the emerging conflicts there. The meetings took place on 6th and 7th July in various places in Zanzibar.
The first meeting with scholars from Zanzibar University took place in Stone Town on 6th July. In the afternoon, a meeting with religious leaders and government representatives was held, and Iftar Dinner meeting with government officials, Imams and religious scholars hosted by the local community leaders.
On 7th July, the mission met with the Minister of Constitution and Justice of Zanzibar, before meeting with Muslim scholars and academics from the Zanzibar University College of Education.

The trend towards violent extremism in the region has had negative impact on children and young people in the Horn of Africa. Religious leaders in the region have voiced concerns about this trend, and have called on the stakeholders in the region to address this negative trend, before it gets out of control.
