GNRC Joins Faith Leaders to Advocate for Peace in Africa: The GNRC Kenya Coordinator, Sh. Ramadhan Aula, was among the Eminent Persons Ecumenical Program for Peace in Africa (EPEPPA) delegates who met AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, (PAPS) H.E. Amb. Bankole Adegboyega Adeoye at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on 17th September 2021.
The delegation, comprising of Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki, AACC General Secretary, leader of the delegation; Sh. Ramadhan Aula, GNRC Kenya; Dr. Agness Abuom, World Council of Churches; Rev. Dr. Suzanne Matale, former General Secretary, Council of Churches in Zambia; Archbishop Martin Nyaboho, Anglican Church, Burundi; and Mr. Gorden Simango – AACC Addis Ababa Liaison, delivered a message of solidarity with AUC’s peace work in Africa.
The interfaith delegation expressed concerns that the continent is plagued by multiple crises including political instability, armed conflicts, and climate related disasters. These conditions are worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his remarks, Sh. Ramadhan Aula, said that there is need for faith leaders in Africa to work together with the Commission to prevent religious radicalization and recruitment into violent extremism especially for youth and children. He cited programs complementing the work of governments in peace building efforts such as the Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism (BRAVE) and Diminishing the Prevalence of Radicalization and Violent Extremism (D-PRIVE).
The African Union Commissioner welcomed the EPEPPA delegation and assured members that the AU Commission will consider their recommendations presented to him.
