The primary supporter of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), Arigatou International is a non-profit organization which strives to bring people from all walks of life together to build a better world for children. Arigatou International is “All for Children,” and it draws on universal principles of common good to offer compelling new ways for people of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds to work together on children’s issues.

Arigatou International develops and sustains unique multi-stakeholder initiatives designed to ensure that all children are treated with dignity, all children’s rights are respected, and all children have the opportunity to freely pursue their full human potential. Involving diverse partners, these initiatives emphasize both grassroots action and international advocacy.

Arigatou International has great faith in children, and always invites them to help shape its work. Young people are deeply respected, active partners in every Arigatou initiative.

In the year 2000, Arigatou International inaugurated the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC), which continues to grow today as a platform for interfaith cooperation on children’s issues. In 2008, with UNICEF and UNESCO, it launched Learning to Live Together: An Intercultural and Interfaith Programme for Ethics Education. It also launched a global movement of Prayer and Action for Children, and in 2012, the Interfaith Initiative to End Child Poverty. From religious leaders, to international organizations, to grassroots child rights workers, people on every continent have enthusiastically welcomed these initiatives, and they continue to grow rapidly in reach, diversity, and impact.

Arigatou International (then “Arigatou Foundation”) was founded in 1990 by the Japanese Buddhist organization Myochikai, whose members continue to support its work today with donations. The name “Arigatou” means “thank you” in Japanese, and it expresses the spirit of the Myochikai members, who are grateful to have the opportunity to support children around the world by their giving.

Holding special consultative status with UN ECOSOC and consultative status with UNICEF, and as a member of Child Rights Connect (formerly the NGO Group for the CRC) and of the Child Rights Information Network (CRIN), Arigatou International liaises and works jointly with UN agencies and other NGOs to foster cooperation within a rights-based approach to the profound issues faced by children and youth today. For Arigatou International, the full implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a critical goal and essential step on the path to a world that is healthy and just for all children and youth. In May 2002, Rev. Takeyasu Miyamoto, President of the Arigatou Foundation, spoke at the Special Session on Children of the United Nations General Assembly, pledging Arigatou’s commitment to the CRC, providing interfaith ethics education, and addressing child poverty.

Arigatou International has its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, with offices in Geneva, Switzerland (supporting Ethics Education for Children), New York, USA (supporting Prayer and Action for Children) and Nairobi, Kenya (supporting End Child Poverty and the Global Network of Religions for Children).
