“Climate justice is every child’s right, not a privilege.“

Children in Lahore are making their voices heard in matters of climate change. In a child-led initiative organized by GNRC Member Search for Justice (SFJ) Pakistan in partnership with Kindernothilfe e.V., young participants engaged directly with policymakers to share their concerns and propose solutions to environmental challenges affecting their lives.
The event, held at Government LESCO Girls High School, brought together members of SFJ’s children’s forum and Ms. Kanwal Liaqat, the Parliamentary Secretary for Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Government of Punjab. The discussion centered on the severe impact of climate change, with children sharing firsthand experiences of rising temperatures, air pollution, and water scarcity.
Rooted in Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which upholds children’s right to express their views on matters affecting them, the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the effects of climate change and sustainable environmental practices, empower children to participate in policy discussions and share their perspectives, and advocate for child-inclusive policies that address climate challenges.
During the event, children suggested practical solutions, including tree-planting campaigns, reducing plastic use, and promoting water conservation. At the policy level, they called for stricter industrial regulations, improved waste management, and increased investment in renewable energy.
Acknowledging the significance of children’s perspectives, Ms. Kanwal Liaqat proposed launching a provincial policy dialogue on “Children’s Perspectives in Climate Action” in collaboration with SFJ and Kindernothilfe. She assured the young participants that their voices would be considered in future climate policies.
The initiative underscored the importance of involving children in climate action and decision-making. SFJ and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening such engagements, ensuring that children remain active contributors to shaping a sustainable and secure future.
