Pakistan Commemorates 2019’s International Women’s Day
GNRC–Pakistan together with St. Mary's Public School celebrated the International Women’s Day on 8th March 2019 at the school’s community hall in Karachi, Pakistan. Guided by 2019’s theme, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change,” participants celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in Pakistan and across the world. A total of thirty five (35) participants comprising women and young girls attended the event.
During the celebration, GNRC Member and Principal, St. Mary's Public School, Mr. David Paul, shared GNRC’s commitment to uplifting the lives of women and young girls in the society. He added that women have a major role in the development of the society, especially in preventing all forms of violence against children. “Women are the backbone of the society and it is through their efforts that communities all over the world are able to stand strong,” he noted. He shared GNRC’s commitment to inclusive and equitable quality education which addresses SDG 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Women shared their thoughts about the meaning of the women’s international day and recognized the efforts of all women at home and at work, especially single mothers who strive daily to make ends meet. Members emphasized the need to have the entire world empower women to take advantage of the expanding global economy for development. They noted that some countries in the world are still adamant that women are confined to the kitchen. They said time has come for women to assume their role in the society specifically in the ranks of peace and sustainable development.
International Women's Day is celebrated annually on 8th March to focus on innovative ways in which the world can progress in gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure. But the global campaign continues all year round to encourage call to action for accelerating gender parity and in distribution of opportunities.
