The GNRC together with other Faith Based Organizations launched The Asia Pacific Faith-based Coalition for Sustainable Development (APFC) on 28th March 2018 as a side event during a meeting organized by the Asia – Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development, to discuss ways to build sustainable and resilient societies in the region. The meeting, moderated by Mr. Norbert Hsu, Regional Leader of World Vision International was held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ms. Raquel Sherman, a young GNRC member from Panama was featured on the TEDx Talk show on 11th March 2018. Ms. Sherman addressed the local audience and media in Panama on the role of children and youth in peace and development. In her presentation themed, “Two Sides of a Coin: Youth Empowerment,” she emphasized the need to empower youth with ideas and opportunities to enable them to contribute to global peace and sustainable growth. In her opinion, youth empowerment is about creating opportunities for the youth to be involved and to follow through on their actions and also about making youth believe in themselves, thereby enabling them to create their own opportunities and be brave enough to follow them through.

Search For Justice/CAN Pakistan, a member of GNRC–Pakistan, in partnership with the Pakistan Police Department and the Australian High Commission-Pakistan, organized a child safety training workshop in Sheikhupura, Pakistan aimed at increasing the effectiveness of police officers towards countering violence against children. Approximately thirty five (35) participants comprising police officers from the Child Safety Cell and government officials attended the workshop.

GNRC–Kenya through BRAVE/CSCR held a Madrassa Committee Meeting on 14th March 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss the context of violence against children in madrassas and possible solutions to preventing and ultimately ending the menace. The meeting was the second of its kind after the previous one held in 2nd December 2017. The seven (7) committee member organizations, comprising religious leaders and professionals, discussed various ways to end violence against children in Madrassas, and came up with resolutions and way forward on the issue.

‘Learning to Live Together’ in Romania

In March 2018, GNRC–Romania conducted 10 sessions on ‘Learning to Live Together,’ supported by GNRC’s sister initiative, Ethics Education for Children. The trainings reached one hundred and seventy nine (179) students from different schools in Bucharest, Romania.

Advocacy Workshop to Protect Children, Pakistan

Search For Justice/CAN Pakistan, a member of GNRC–Pakistan, in partnership with the local government and the Australian High Commission in Pakistan, organized a two-day workshop from 13th to 14th March 2018 to discuss sustainable solutions towards preventing violence against children in Pakistan. The workshop, which took place in Faisalabad, Pakistan, was attended by thirty five (35) participants from the local government, civil society organizations, community leaders and officials from the Australian High Commission. The Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Faisalabad, Mr. Sheikh Muhammad Yousaf, graced the workshop.

Nurturing Spirituality within the Family to Prevent Violence Against Children in Brazil

On 7th March 2018, Arigatou International Geneva and GNRC–Brazil together with Pastoral da Criança, co-organized a roundtable discussion on Strengthening Families to Nurture Values and Spirituality in Early Childhood for the Prevention of Violence Against Children. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Pai Alexandre Silveira, leader from the African Traditional Religions and GNRC Coordinator in Brazil; attended by sixty (60) participants including religious leaders, civil society and journalists from the national media. The roundtable discussion was conducted to analyze the context of violence against children, its effects on the integral development of a child and seek solutions towards addressing the problem in the country.
